How much time is your team currently spending checking an 8D report for completeness and plausibility before it goes out to the customer? That question was at the centre of a free online impulse session, "Making Complaint Handling More Efficient with AI," which I co-hosted on July 23 with Helmut Bayer, Managing Director of TQU GROUP — with over 50 participants.

The problem: reviewing eats time that root-cause work needs

An 8D report only justifies the effort once the root-cause analysis holds up, the containment actions work, and the corrective actions actually address the root cause. Getting a report to that point often means multiple rounds of review and rework — and every round costs time that should really go into the substance of the work. When there aren't enough experienced colleagues, that review work piles up on just a few people and becomes a bottleneck.

The live demo: reviewing an 8D report in minutes, not hours

The centrepiece of the session was a live demo of the 8D Checker on a real example report: instead of spending hours reading through it, the structured review — are all eight disciplines complete, is the root cause plausibly derived, are the corrective actions traceably linked back to that cause — was done in a few minutes. The result isn't an automatic sign-off; it's a structured starting point: gaps and open questions are immediately visible, so the team can focus its review time on the parts that genuinely need professional judgement.

What this means for your team

The point of a review like this isn't that AI takes over the technical decision. It's that it handles the mechanical part of the review — completeness, consistency, traceability — so the people on your team can spend their time where experience actually matters: judging whether a root cause truly holds up. That's especially valuable for less experienced colleagues who don't yet have years of 8D-report reviews behind them — they get the kind of structured, consistent feedback that would otherwise only come from an experienced auditor, and grow into that role themselves along the way.

Thanks to everyone who attended and to Helmut Bayer for co-hosting the session — and a special thanks to the many questions from the audience, which brought real value for everyone in the room. TQU GROUP's original announcement post with background on the event is available on LinkedIn.
